Top Tips for the Perfect Stair Runner

Stylish, homely and versatile, stair runners make a statement in the home. But if you’ve never installed one before, there are some handy tips to know before you get started. From the design to the fitting, we share our top 6 tips in this blog post!

1. Think continuity

Did you know that you can use the same carpet for your stair runner as the carpet in the other rooms of your home? You don’t need a special fabric! So, to create flow within your home, you can opt for a similar, or even the same carpet used in other rooms.

2. Show your personality!

A stair runner is an ideal opportunity to use a pattern or pop of colour. If you love unique and quirky designs, why not choose a zebra or leopard print, a stripe or floral design? There’s no limit to how bold you can go! If simplicity is more your style, perhaps go for a sisal carpet with a coloured or neutral border.

When choosing the design of your stair runner, the options are vast! Here at Rowe Carpets, we can help you find your perfect carpet. Just get in touch with our friendly team, who will be more than happy to send you some samples. Call us on 01562 820821.

3. Traditional fit or upholstered stair runners?

There are different ways of fitting stair runners. A traditional fit, also known as ‘waterfall’, involves clipped pad corners, which makes the carpet look as if it is ‘cascading’ over the step and down to the tread below. An upholstered fit, also known as ‘Hollywood’, will require more fabric as the carpet wraps tightly around the front edge of the step and is fixed under the nose.

4. Remember to edge your runner!

Nobody likes a frayed edge! The edges of your stair runner will need to be ‘whipped’, which prevents fraying of the fabric. Alternatively, you could add a border which is a great way of adding a pop of colour or a different texture, if you wish. Borders generally come in cotton, linen, leather or suede.

5. Fabric choice is essential

Durability is key for stair runners; the stairs are usually high traffic areas of the house so you need something that will stand the test of time. Wool is often the most popular choice; not only does it have a luxurious feel, but it also has high durability. Consider budgeting more for a quality carpet that you won’t need to replace in a few years!

The weave is also an important thing to consider. With endless options to choose from, you won’t be deprived of choice! Fabrics with a high pile will be fluffier and soft but are more likely to be snagged by shoes (or our four-legged friends!). So, be sure to find the right balance for your household – just get in touch with our expert team, who will be able to advise on the right option for you. Call us on 01562 820821.

6. Don’t forget your rug padding

A stair runner installation done right can not only significantly improve the overall look of the staircase, but can also improve the safety of the structure. Adding padding helps the carpet last longer, increases the level of comfort and even helps to absorb sound – perfect for a busy household!
