Five Hacks to Keep your New Carpet Looking Fresh
After spending so much time at home this year, many of us have finally got around to renovating our homes, and a new carpet can completely transform the look and feel of a room. With Rowe Carpets, you can buy carpet online or in-store and choose from a vast range of different styles, designs and materials to find the right one for your home.
But after finding your dream carpet, how do you keep it looking fresh all year-round? We’ve rounded up our five best hacks to avoid signs of wear and tear for longer. So, let’s get to it.
1. Remove stains with an iron
Let’s face it, life happens. Kids drop food, drinks get spilt, and dirt gets trodden in. So, when the inevitable happens, don’t fret – all you’ll need is an iron, a towel, white vinegar and water.
First, give the area around the stain a vacuum to get rid of any dust and dirt within the carpet’s fibres. Dampen your towel with a solution of one-part white vinegar to three-parts water and lay it over your stain. Use the iron to heat the towel, pressing it into the floor; this should lift the stain into the towel. And voila! A fresh carpet.
To avoid the problem, you could opt for a stain-free carpet. Coated with a special finish which prevents stains and spillages from settling into the fabric’s fibres, our stain-free carpets are the perfect solution for busy households. 2. Get rid of pet hair with a shower squeegee
It’s hard for any household to keep a carpet looking new, bright and fresh all year-round, especially when it’s home to certain four-legged friends. Pet hair is particularly difficult to eliminate, even with a vacuum. But, if you buy a carpet that has short fibres, you can simply wet your shower squeegee, and scrape up that pesky fur. It’s the paw-fect solution!
3. Fluff up dented carpet with ice cubes
Heavy furniture such as tables, wardrobes and bookcases can cause your carpet to dent and, when you come to move your furniture around, it can leave your floor looking worn and tired. But did you know that you can remove these impressions with an ice cube? Just place one on the dented area, leave it to melt, and soak up the remaining water by covering it with a towel and applying heat with an iron. That’s it!
4. Deodorise musty carpet with bicarbonate of soda
We hate to say it, but over time your carpet can hold onto unwanted smells, especially when pets are involved. To combat the issue, sprinkle some bicarbonate of soda over the carpet, leave it for around 15 minutes, then vacuum. The bicarb soaks up bad smells and leaves your carpet with a fresh scent. This technique works on many different types of flooring, but if you’re still deciding which carpet to buy online or in-store, we’ve rounded up all the various options in this blog post.
5. Revamp areas of high traffic
You may start to notice your carpet looking flatter in areas of high traffic – usually in hallways, landings and between rooms. To ‘fluff up’ the fibres, start by vacuuming the carpet to remove any dust or dirt, then spray over a solution of white vinegar and water in equal parts, being careful not to completely soak the carpet. After 10 to 30 minutes, gently blot the liquid with a towel and scrape the carpet with the edge of a spoon – yes, a spoon! –to encourage the fibres to spring up.
With these hacks in mind, you can rest assured that you’ll be able to keep your carpet looking nice and fresh for much longer. Ready to transform your home? Have a browse of our fantastic range of flooring and buy a carpet online or in-store to bring a new lease of life to your living space.
